Albemarle - Charlottesville Regional Jail Breaks Ground On Long Needed Renovations

The Albemarle–Charlottesville Regional Jail has broken ground on its $49 million major renovation and modernization project, which is intended to bring the facility into compliance with current ADA standards and modernize operations to enhance safety and mental health support for inmates.

The renovation will include a new lobby, outdoor recreation areas, a visitors’ area, beds designed specifically for individuals with mental health needs, and additional private rooms to support both inmates and staff. Construction is underway, with completion anticipated in October 2027.

Downey & Scott is providing construction management services for this project. The facility was designed by Moseley and will be constructed by English Construction.
